Hindi magiging interstellar star si Julia Roberts kung hindi dahil sa kanyang breakout role sa Steel Magnolias noong 1989. Ngunit dreadful experience rin para sa kanya ang naturang opportunity of a lifetime.
Si Julia ang gumanap na buoyant-but-fragile na si Shelby, anak ni M’Lynn (Sally Field) – isang karakter na ang pakikipagsapalaran sa buhay ay nagpaiyak sa mga manonood ng Steel. Ngunit bumabaha rin ng luha sa likod ng camera.
“[Roberts] would come to my house every night and say, ‘I think I’m terrible. What am I doing?’ and she really was in tears,” pagbabalik-tanaw ni Shirley MacLaine, na gumanap bilang ang masungit na si Ouiser. Si Sally ay partially responsible sa kalbaryo ni Julia sa set – gayundin sa pagsikat nito. Siya ang nagmungkahi kay Ross na kunin si Julia para sa papel na Shelby.
Noong una ay hindi makapaniwala si Julia, tumanggap ng best supporting actress Oscar nomination para sa kanyang papel, na pinili siya para makasama sa canon of talent na kinabibilangan nina Sally, Shirley, Dolly, Olympia Dukakis, at Daryl Hannah. “I went to the audition with the intention of not getting it,” sabi niya sa kanyang biography na Julia: Her Life.
Tinalakay rin ni Dolly ang matigas na puso ni Ross sa kanyang biography, Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business. “He didn’t particularly like me or Julia Roberts at the start and was very hard on us… Julia Roberts was not the big star she is now, and I think Herbert Ross resented having to use her. He told me I couldn’t act. This was not news to me, and I told him so. ‘I’m not an actress, I’m Dolly Parton. I’m a personality who has been hired to do this movie. You’re the director. It’s your job to make me look like I’m acting.’ By the end of the film, we had all made peace and become friends.”
