VATICAN CITY (AP) — Nagbitiw at umurong ang pinakamataas na lider ng mga Katoliko sa Britain noong Linggo sa gaganaping conclave, sinabing ayaw niyang makasira ang alegasyong sangkot siya sa improper conduct sa kanyang kaparian sa mataimtim na proseso ng pagpipili ng susunod na lider ng 1.2 bilyong Katoliko.
“I do not wish media attention in Rome to be focused on me — but rather on Pope Benedict XVI and on his successor,” sabi ni O’Brien, archbishop of St. Andrews at Edinburgh. “However, I will pray with them and for them that, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, they will make the correct choice for the future good of the church.”
Ito ang unang pagkakataon na idiniskwalipika ng isang cardinal ang kanyang sarili sa conclave dahil sa personal scandal, ayon sa Vatican historians. Iginiit ng Vatican na tinanggap ni Pope Benedict XVI ang pagbibitiw ni Cardinal Keith O’Brien dahil si O’Brien ay malapit nang tumunotong sa edad na 75 — at hindi dahil sa mga akusasyon.
